Integration of ICT in education

Technology plays a vital role in today's world. Technology makes our work much faster and easier.  It has become daily needs in our lives.  In the century of technology we need to learn how to integrate them into our daily teaching and learning process.

The term integration of ICT into schools and classrooms according to Pisapia(1994) means the use of  learning technologies to introduce, reinforce, supplement and extend skills.  The integration of technologies into learning are essential with these generation of students.  Integrating ICT into learning is basically to facilitate the learning, make students an active learner and making them explore and discover their own learning.

There are three levels of technology integration into our teaching and learning.

  1.   Low level of technology integration
  2. Middle level of technology integration
  3.  High level of technology integration

When it comes to integration of ICT into learning and teaching we fall under the low level of integration, the low level of integration is characterized by use of technology as a source of downloading, sharing, transferring, and uploading of files and information.  There is no involvement of learning and creation of ideas happening with the use of the technologies.

The middle level of integration refers to the use of technology to for teaching as well as for learning, there is involvement of both learning and teaching happening in this level but there is no new creation of ideas and creation in the learning using technologies. The high level is the advanced level of sharing, involvement and creation of learning and ideas with the help of technology.

When we are aware of the three levels of integration, we must aim at reaching the best level of integration of ICT into our teaching and learning process.  The question of how to integrate comes into picture, well as a going to be teaching use of ICT is a must tool to deliver the content.  We can integrate ICT into education by  firstly having good instructional materials , secondly the there should be a good planning using the ICT and thirdly the excellent delivery of lesson using ICT to please and make our students learn in better way.

With the end of class, I learned how to integrate and why to integrate  ICT for teaching.

Benefits of ICT,

  1. Better  result outcomes of students
  2. Helps to reduce the social disparities between pupils, since they work in teams to achieve a given task
  3. ICT tools stimulate teachers to plan their lesson more efficiently.
  4.   It can motivate the learners with the use of internet and computers.

Digital Native verses Digital Immigrant

I am a digital native because I am born in the world of technology, I make use of most of the technologies that are around me such as phone, computer, laptop, and television. Digital native refers to those who are expert and uses most of the technologies.
During the class we were made to calculate how much time we spent on technologies mentioned above. I found out that I spend almost 50% of my day using those digitals.

Digital immigrant are those who are usually born before 1980's, they learn how to use the technologies and uses them but they are not expert in using them as the native.  some typical characteristics of digital immigrants are they would print out the document in order to edit them instead of doing it on screen, they sent and email as well as call to inform them about the email being sent.

Why we need to learn about ICT and why we need to use it in teaching and learning?

We need to integrate ICT into everyday teaching and learning as the youth today are far advanced in using technologies, they are more interested to learn things which excites them. The teacher being the sage on the stage will not work anymore, they will get bored to remain idle and being passive listener.  they will take interest in things which they don't know and to be taught in the way they want and prefer.  Therefore ICT helps to cater to all kinds of learners.
